St. Paul’s United Church
Our Mission: Glorifying God through Worship, Proclaiming the Gospel of Christ, and Serving Others in Christ’s name.
From the desk of Rev. Michelle…
It was wonderful to see so many people and feel the energy in the sanctuary this past Sunday. The coffee time afterward was alive as well. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend in person and online. For those who joined in on Zoom, I know the experience was different, and that you may have needed to adjust the sound during viewing. I appreciate your patience as we establish the shared ministry and look at what we need to move forward and bring improvements to our digital experience. I am sorry for any inconvenience or challenges that these changes may have caused. If you need support, please reach out.
This past week watching the news and hearing about elections at home and the USA, continued wars in Israel and Palestine and between Ukraine and Russia, I have been thinking a fair bit about how the world today is so divided. Too often people are pitting one group against another, and this type of communication just drives us farther apart. In so many places, society seems to be at a breaking point. This world at war with itself is not the world that God envisioned for us.
I think in this Shared ministry we are doing something extraordinary in this day and age. It is not easy to take two groups, even two groups that have so many similarities, and bring them together. Just by being we are a living example, or at least we seek to be, of how to live with each other in our similarities and our differences. In many ways, we have taken up the mantle of the counter-cultural status of the early Church.
Will this always go smoothly? No, there will be tensions and differences of opinion. That is the beauty of the diversity that God has created. In the tougher times, may we seek understanding and empathy as we work together on our future. The work we are doing here, in Christ’s name, will be a witness to the wider church of how we can work together for the Gospel while honouring the diversity of Christ’s body. It will also stand as a training ground for the attitudes and reactions that need to spread through our wider society. Thanks be to God for this important work and the opportunities it holds.
As we move into the weekend let us pray,
God, you created this world with such care.
Your creativity has formed such a diversity of landscapes, plants, animals and people.
It is truly amazing and breathtaking.
Help us to not be afraid of that which is different,
but instead appreciate the differences that are expressed all around us.
Ground us in the deep truth that everything is yours and you care for all of your creation.
As we seek to honour and praise you, we ask for your guidance and your wisdom.
Let your blessings flow over the ministry that St. Paul’s and St. Andrew’s are engaged in.
Let us be a light in this world and a sign of your hope for today.
This we pray in Christ’s name. Amen.
