St. Paul’s United Church
Our Mission: Glorifying God through Worship, Proclaiming the Gospel of Christ, and Serving Others in Christ’s name.
From the desk of Rev. Michelle
Did you know that the United Church has deployed, among the region’s, growth animators? Having heard congregations crying for new strategies and support in turning around negative trends, these animators are like tools in a toolbox. They can help us think about our ministry in ways that we have not previously done before. This week I want to share part of our growth animator Sharon Ballantyne Pentecost message that was sent by email on the 16th:
“If you or someone you know is a gardener, soil is being tilled and prepared, fertilizers added, seeds planted, seedlings carefully being tended, watched, prayed over, sung to and talked to. Pruning is happening and that which is no longer needed is being removed, let go of, to make room for new life and growth. While some things are composted, some things are taking new root. Life and growing requires action. “The seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it” (Matt 13:23 NIV). Where is your community of faith finding itself in the garden analogy?
How is your community experiencing renewal, being resilient and dreaming its future? Recently a faith leader used the illustration of a community of faith, clear in their purpose, able to say it in a few words. “Love God, live faith and love the land.” Their priorities, actions, education and advocacy reflect knowing and embracing their identity in actions centred around land. Another community of faith is being intentional to welcome people of diverse cultures and providing opportunities for each to speak their own language. As recorded in Acts, on that day of Pentecost, all could join the conversation. Each could hear in their own language.
What actions are you taking in your community of faith, empowering you to thrive and flourish? Call me about your summer plans, your planning for September to Christmas? Start with your next right step! Let’s chat about the gifts and characteristics that make your community of faith uniquely you in this diverse world. Everyone is part of God’s story. Spirit is on the move. We are all part of the tapestry of belonging for all, breaking barriers, bridging gaps, creating relationships, supporting us all to live with deep spirituality, bold discipleship and daring justice.”
I am hoping to get a chance to meet Sharon in person while at the annual meeting and enquire about what she may be able to do for our congregation as we continue to look towards a new future. In the meantime I just want to remind you all that I will be in PEI for the regional annual meeting, for emergencies please call my cell, if I am unable to step away immediately please leave a message and I will return your call. For worship, we will be worshipping at St. Andrew’s at 11:00pm. As we move into this weekend let us pray
God of freshly tilled dirt and seedlings,
We give thanks for your Spirit that inspires and moves us to action,
Help us to see the lessons in this season,
How pruning brings new life,
How intentionally picking what will grow enhances life,
How we sew seeds abundantly seeds, trusting that plants will sprout and
Teach us the power of patience as nothing wonderful has ever grown completely overnight.
Amen.
